PhD Fully Funded Position in Soil Microbiome at Cornell University in the United States

The Casteel lab at Cornell University is recruiting a PhD graduate student for Fall 2023! 


Summary:

The student will develop independent research on soil microbiome-mediated resilience to climate change in organic farming systems. Competitive applicants will have a strong interest in microbial ecology, entomology, sustainable agriculture, soil health, climate change, and/or machine learning. Demonstrated prior research or extension experience involving public stakeholders is highly valued.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work directly with organic farmers, aid in the development of rapid microbiome sequencing platform, and to become proficient in molecular biology, chemical ecology, and field and/or laboratory experiments that quantify the function of microbes in plant-insect interactions and agroecosystems. This project is co-led by Dr. Elias Bloom, with support from Cornell Climate Smart Farming, the NE Climate Center, and the national farmer extension platform eOrganic.


About Ithaca:

The Casteel lab is located at Cornell University in gorgeous Ithaca, NY. Situated in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York, Ithaca has an ample waterfront fed by over local 150 waterfalls, excellent fall color, hiking, and water trails. The downtown area of Ithaca boasts a pedestrian mall featuring locally owned businesses, world renowned vegan and vegetarian dining, and a year-round farmers market. The Cornell campus is serviced, free of charge to students, via public transportation.


Stipend & Benefits:

Accepted candidates are guaranteed* financial support through a Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA), plus additional summer salary, for 5 years. The minimum salary for RA and TA positions at Cornell University are currently $30,088 for the 9-month academic year and the salary is $10,029 for a full time appointment during the 3-month summer ($40,179 annually). RA and TA appointments include health insurance and tuition is paid by the lab.

*Students must be enrolled full time and maintain a 3.0 GPA

PhD scholarship in Conversion of Methanol to Jet Fuel

We offer you a unique opportunity to join DTUs Department of Chemical Engineering in the development and study of a process for conversion of methanol to jet fuel. The overall process involves conversion of methanol to shorter olefins followed by oligomerisation of these olefins to jet fuel range hydrocarbons. The project will be conducted in a close collaboration with the company Topsoe.

You will be based at DTU Chemical Engineering, at the CHEC research group in a dynamic international research environment. The project is part of a large project consortium funded by Innovation Fund Denmark with the objective of paving the path for green fuels for transport and industry in Denmark, for more information see https://missiongreenfuels.dk/.   


Responsibilities and qualifications

The aim of the PhD project will be to experimentally study the catalytic oligomerisation of lower olefins to jet fuel range hydrocarbons. The work will involve testing of various catalysts with respect to selectivity and stability, process optimization and kinetic modelling. The main part of the work will be done at the Department of Chemical Engineering using a fixed bed flow reactor setup.

More specifically the position will involve the following tasks:

  • Literature study on olefin oligomerisation, relevant catalysts, and kinetics of the reaction

  • Based on the literature study a suite of relevant catalysts should be identified and acquired, or synthesized if needed, for initial screening studies. The catalysts should be characterized by relevant methods to identify structure-activity relationships.

  • Screening of the catalysts for their catalytic performance using a fixed bed flow reactor. The most promising candidates should undergo further detailed studies and optimization of reaction conditions.

  • Development of a kinetic model for the reaction to predict the product composition. The model should also include catalyst deactivation as a function of operating conditions and its influence on the product composition.

  • You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Knowledge and/or experiences in heterogeneous catalysis and mathematical modelling of reactions and parameter estimation will be an advantage.


Approval and Enrolment

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Anker Jensen, associate professor Martin Høj and Martin Dan Palis Sørensen of the Topsoe company.

Salary and appointment terms

导师简介

陆玉前博士,本科毕业于大连理工大学,博士毕业于新西兰奥克兰大学。现为奥克兰大学机械工程系博士生导师、工业人工智能课题组负责人。主要从事智能制造系统、工业人工智能和共融机器人等方向的研究,在国际顶级制造和自动化期刊上共发表35篇SCI论文。其中JCR一区论文28篇,累计谷歌他引2300次。

2019年至今共发表ESI高被引文章7篇,ESI热点文章1篇。至今主持新西兰科技部及企业横向课题共7项。多项研究成果在制造和建筑等领域成功商业化。担任北美制造业协会(The North American Manufacturing Research Institution of SME (NAMRI | SME)科学委员会成员,IET Collaborative Intelligent Manufacturing杂志副主编。
